MBFW Berlin Day 2: Bright Trade Show

Whenever I'm at the Berlin Fashionweek, I'm always like: I want to have this and shop this and that and oh my gosh, this one is so so beautiful.. but yep, maybe in a year, which is not thaaat bad for my pocket (I'm still trying to save money!). But here comes a small insight into this year's Bright Trade Show, Europe's biggest Skate and Streetwear Fair:

In the first pictures, you'll see that Adidas Originals is bringing out a bunch of Skate Shoes next summer, which I am really happy about because looking for adidas skating shoes here in Germany was kind of disappointing. There weren't many designs, so that I'm now pretty excited about the next season. The one in the right upper corner is my favorite, I really love the combination of royal blue and cyan. If you're into sneakers as well, what's your favorite?

Sandra and I did a stop at the Burton booth and they introduced us to their new apparal and bag collection, which is mostly inspired by Outdoor/Camping/Hiking Adventures. So, for all travelers out there who plan some tours into nature, Burton has a few transitional pieces such as the light-weight Poncho or the board shorts, which has a cool idea: the fabric changes its appearance when getting wet. Isn't that nice? Too bad, that's only for men.

The women's collection is inspired by the ocean and the jellyfish, some pieces have the print on it, which I really like. The t-shirt below is my favorite, but the women's wear is mostly hippie/surf/beach-oriented. But there is also this variety of backpacks for either work, school or outdoor trips. What do you guys think of Burton's Spring/Summer 2015 Collection?

And then, we found out about RVCA, don't really know how to say it the right way, I think some of their PR-people said 'ruca', oh Wikipedia says: rue-cuh.. still not sure though. But anyways, we saw the women's line and really fell in love with the cuts and prints. In the last picture, you'll actually see a jumpsuit, isn't it lovely? Cannot wait for this piece to come out next summer and wear it to the lake! The brand is based in California, oh yes! but belongs to the Australian brand Billabong. RVCA has its focus on the art, surf and skateboard scene, I really need to check them out when I'm back there.. have you guys heard about them yet?

Ride into Summer with Funky Summer // Loaded Boards

Did I tell you guys that I am right now doing somewhat of an internship at Fränky's Funky Summer Longboardshop in Berlin? Well, if not, this is actually my last week before I am fully diving into my travel plans :) This internship has been really good because it is totally different from everything I worked with before. But more to these pictures right here:

Last Friday, July 11th, the Loaded Teamriders Adam Colton, Daniel Fissmer, Ethan Cochard and Lotfi Lamaali took a stop in Berlin during their Europe Tour to skate and hang out with. Although Fränky planned a Best Trick Contest, we played some funny games like 'Bite the Bag' instead.

It was amazing to meet these guys and to get to know them a bit better. My friends and I had tons of fun and we played and laughed a lot, just like children. Thank you guys for being there and spreading the passion you have for this sport! And also thank you for anyone who stopped by, watched and played with us :)

A big thank you to Fränky who made this terrific get-together
and event happening, hope you enjoyed it, too ;-)

Throwback Thursday: European Longboard Dance Contest 2013

Happy Faces all over this book :)

Whenever I'm in Berlin, I need to stop by at a special longboard shop and say hi to its owner :) It's Funky Summer in Wedding, Berlin where I got my very first longboard. So, it's always nice to see Fränky and what he has been up to. This January when I was there, I saw this huge book lying there and I was like: Oh my! Are these pictures from the European Longboard Contest last summer? Yes, indeed! I haven't seen him since that summer and it was nice to look back again :)

Fränky printed some funny shots from the riders into a large book, so that any visitor who comes around, can have a look :) Just wanted to show some of them to you and take a look back at last summer's big longboard event :) It was amazing and a lovely experience, but read the whole story here..

Mindful Monday: Thoughts on 2013

I actually wanted to show you guys a lovely book, which I got for my birthday, but this will be for next Mindful Monday then ;-) So, I came across these 25 questions to ask yourself before the end of the year by MindBodyGreen and tried to answer a few of them. Now, I want what I've thought while answering the questions.

What lessons have I learned?
You are NEVER too old to learn something new. JUST DO IT.
No doubts, no fear. Embrace yourself, do whatever you want. Stay strong, everyone else is going through the same feelings and the same issues, they are going as far as you do,
but can and will you make it further?

Always be nice and grateful, be the best version of yourself!

Do not hang around too much with people who don't understand you or drain your energy. Turn to those who inspire and bring out the best in you.

Always be open and stay curious, you never know what will happen next.

Stay true to yourself and don't regret decisions and situations.

How did I spend my free time?
With new hobbies. I've started a new passion called Longboarding in May this year.
Read my longboard story here ;-)
Additionally I've found my way back to blogging.

When did I feel most creatively inspired?
When I met strangers, some became friends and the 2nd half of the year was very inspiring: with my internship at LesMads, with longboarding and fellow skaters,
with Off Color and Dreams
with small moments in life like taking a walk with my mother
or doing random acts of kindness :)

When have I felt the most alive?

How can I improve my relationships?
More patience, my dear.
Learn to let go of the past, forgive people and you have a decision to change your behavior every single day.
Read my Flexible Mind post :)

What would I like to cultivate?
Do more of what I love, have more fun.
Don't take life toooo serious, but hey,
play hard, work hard ;-)

I want less and clearing clutter.
Trusting my gut more, decide intuitively.

How can I be kind to myself?
Stop watching and comparing to others,
start doing and be the best YOU you can be!

As you can see, one of the best moments was getting into longboarding, which gave me so much. More freedom, more creativity, more action and more fun :) I truly love it and after the small tour today, I don't want to miss it anymore. Other than that I'm still learning, it's a lifelong journey and I am grateful for all these magic moments that happened this year, next year it will be even better ;-) Do you have any new year's resolutions? I will post mine soon, so stay tuned!

What else did I learn this year?
Take the good, leave the bad. Making new friends is so inspiring and YES, life is good.
It ALWAYS depends on how you look at it.

Be KIND to strangers, life is full of surprises
and magic moments ♥

Meet Longboarder Melanie Golz

After the impressive weekend full of great artists and dancers, I just had to get in touch with Melanie Golz, 1st place in the European Longboard Dance Championship Berlin 2013. I've already recognized her the very first night at the beach party before the contest started and noticed that she was very special. Melanie definitely has something pure, may it be pure passion or the pure glow I saw in her eyes. She instantly draw my attention and during the contest, she jumped and danced her way through it.

Now, after she won the title, she stayed a few more days in Berlin and we met at a Sushi place for dinner. We've talked about so much and I'm glad to share these inspiring words from her to you. She tells us about how she started longboarding, what meaning it has to her and what else she does in her free time :) So enjoy and please spread the word out :)

Could you introduce yourself?
Yeah, hi everyone, my name is Melanie Golz, I'm from Cologne and I'm 24 years old. I was studying 'sustainable design' but right now I'm travelling.

How long have you been skating?
I've started skating three years ago now, in September. First, I was just riding from A to B, I skated a lot until I eventually started dancing. I also didn't have my own board for about half a year, I had a borrowed one. It's also an interesting story how I actually started.

How come? Why did you start skating?
The first time I saw longboards was back in Australia, when I was travelling there, but moving to Cologne brought me to the actual sport. I got to know skaters and it was really cool to see this sport coming overseas from the US to Germany. I was happy to find people at college who were into it, too. So, one day I went with a buddy to a skateboard shop to get some information about longboards. Another friend stopped by and wanted to take me to their skate spot at the Hohenzollernbrücke. First, I was like: Hey, sorry, I do not have a board. But that was no problem, one of the guys borrowed me one so I followed them cruising through the city.

It was the first time for me skating through the city and it took us half an hour from the Leyndecker Street to the Hohenzollernbrücke. I was totally stoked to skate with them on the streets, tracks and sidewalks. That day I've learned so much by just watching them how they'd pass the streets, and I've tried to do the same things. It was a great feeling and actually my first longboard-moment *big smile on Melanie's face*.

What kind of Longboard are you skating right now?
Right now I'm skating the model 'Stage' from Airflow and I'm very content and happy about it because it's a lot of fun. I also have wonderful green Paris trucks and Orangatang wheels.

Who's your sponsor?
I'm sponsored by the Concrete Wave Shop in Cologne and their own brand Bolzen Hardware and We-Funk wheels and We-Funk bearings from Alex Luckert, Cologne.

So, Melanie you won the European Longboard Dance Contest, how do you feel about it?
How does it feel? Of course awesome! I'm really glad, but didn't expect it although a lot of people thought I'd win again because I just won the last two contests. So, the expectations were pretty high. I didnt put any much pressure on myself and just wanted to stay away from these thoughts. It was more like 'I don't care if I win or not' because I didn't want to feel pressured. Additionally there was a lot going on with college because two weeks ago I've just decided to quit. It wasn't really easy and yeah, it's crazy that I won this competition! I dont know, it's just.. but of course I'm super happy! I'm the female European master of Longboard Dancing.

How did you like the contest and Berlin?
Berlin is great and wonderful, I'm always glad to be here, I like the Berlin scene a lot and to skate with them. The city is just amazing.

About the contest, I honestly have to say that it was a bit chaotic because for example there were no drinks included, that it cost 30 Euro and there were no prizes for the winner. Furthermore when the police came and talked to Fränky, this worried me a bit, but this can always happen if they do not know. I also think that it was a pity that he talked in German the whole time because it was an international contest and he should have done the whole thing in English and the judge were no dancers. That's why I think it's difficult to know the difference of a trick and sometimes, if you don't dance and you don't know how to make this trick, it's hard to tell if it's an easy or hard one. You won't understand what's going on at that moment, you just see that there's a twist but not more than that. And if you would know that this trick is a big spin-180-nose-comply-whatever you would see it and otherwise you don't.

Still, I think it's very cool that Fränky was brave enough to organize something that big. It was the first European Contest and I just hope that maybe next year it will be in Paris or the Netherlands.

What's longboarding for you? In three to five words, please :)
Longboarding for me is a bit of freedom, family and friends all over the world, it's so easy to get to know others; energy, so you could exhaust yourself but also gain some energy because you can free your mind and afterwards you're more aware. For me it's also being creative while dancing on your board and making up new combinations and tricks. It's about your own flow, style and spontaneity, you can always make up combos and it's like: Oh hey, let's do this trick with this one and add this and that. So that's a lot of fun.

What's your signature trick?
It's definitely the cross-step in my special way, so cross step forwards and then jumping backwards by swinging my right foot into the air.

Any good spots in Cologne to skate?
Yes, definitely! Our homespot is the Rheinpark, they've built the Bundesgartenschau in the 50s and now the spot is still there. It's a big green area with lots of trees, small sealed streets and it's right next to the Rhein, so you can just hang out there, jump into the river or skate. There are no cars, there are just pedestrians or bikers, but most of the time we are on a road by ourselves.

What are you doing if you not skate?
If I don't skate, I had college. Now, not anymore. I like meeting up with friends, I cook and bake a lot, and also being creative, designing and taking pictures. I've just started filming and editing and it's one of my biggest dreams to learn it. For now, I film longboarding videos, but I'm up for anything, let's see.

What do you think about the cliché that women cannot skate?
I definitely do not agree with that because women skate as well as men do, but I just think that girls are more afraid of, which is why we need more time to learn or practice something. It's in any sport because of the different muscle structures in women and men.

How does a normal day look like?
A normal day would be getting up, taking a shower, having breakfast if I have time and then out the door to Uni. In the past I skated to college, but nowadays I don't do it anymore because I want to take care of my knees. I skate a lot in my freetime so I don't want to skate to Uni which is 7 km far away and took me 30 to 45minutes with hills.

Do you surf or snowboard?
Yeah, I snowboard, but the last time I did was in March 2012, oh wow, it's one and a half years ago. I've started at the age of 12 or 13; before, I did skiing and so far I went four times to a snowboard trip. I went surfing 2012 in South France, but also just for two days because we went to a longboard trip and I was able to stand on a surfboard. So, I'm super stoked to keep doing it! This year I won't be able to surf again because I'm doing an east Europe trip but hopefully next year, I want to do a small roadtrip through France, Portugal or Italy.

What do you listen to when you dance?
First of all I think skating with music is really nice and there's a different flow but if you're skating with others it's difficult to listen to music because you also want to chat with them. The social part would be limited so I prefer not listening to music when there are people around. Hm, what I listen to is always different, sometimes it's fast and aggressive, other times it's relaxed and more fun, like Tunng. So, there's no specific genre.

How often do you practice skating?
I skate one or two times a week, this year I didn't skate a lot that's why I thought I didn't improve or develop myself compared to last year when I was skating a lot more. This year, Uni was pretty stressful and it's also important for me to see my friends and a lot of them don't skate, so yeah. Sometimes, I also didn't want to skate and to do other things like cooking. Anyways, now that I have so much time, I'm really looking forward to skate more often and to go out every other day. When I met up with friends for skating, we would be at the Rheinpark for three to four hours and hang up together, skate and practice new tricks. It's so nice to be around people who support and push one another and there's always one who can teach you something.

How important is style to you and how would you describe your own skating style?
Of course there are some skaters who stand out from others because of their skills, but if the style (sense of rhythm, transitions and choreography) doesn't look good, the skater won't be able to show an impressive sequence of tricks. There, the aesthetics show ones control of body.

I think that I skate very energetically. A mixture between aggressive and jumping around, but it's difficult to describe one's style. I rather feel it than see it, you know ;-)

Do you have any tips to stay fit?
Healthy nutrition is definitely a big part of it, but also exercising and being content with life will keep your body and mind fit.

Any goals for the future or longboarding?
A bunch of, I want to learn a lot of tricks, would love to learn a full cap or a half cap , it's when you twist around in 360° with your board and then keep on jumping with your board. I'd also like to learn a 360° Body Varioul. It's a pirouette while jumping and also another trick which Lotfi has showed me: It's a twist like in ice-skating on the nose of your board, so you're skating on one truck. And a lot more tricks. Other than that just having fun, being content and finding myself.

Any messages to girls who want to start skating?
Just start, be brave and just talk to people if you see them. Don't be afraid of them because it's always more fun to skate together and watch videos to push yourself. And most importantly feel well with what you do.

Anything you would like to say?
Rock'n'Roll!!! Oh no, that was Fränky's part. Longboarding is a family all over the world which is really amazing.

Melanie, it was really nice talking to you and I hope that we will see more videos of your skating. Thank you for this interview and I am very much looking forward to our next meeting :) Maybe in Cologne?! ;-) And guys, check out her current video 'Smelly Wonderland' and share, share, share! ♥ All the best :) xo

Mindful Monday: Stay Inspired!

How do I feel right now?

In the middle of Unistress and many more activities I feel tired, overwhelmed and I'm longing for something new. Something fresh, something inspiring, something motivational. It might be the case that I didn't skate for two weeks and now I feel sluggish. This cold weather doesn't help either.

So what? The other day I've talked to a dear friend from the U.S. and she sent me this from tinybuddha.com. It's a list of 50 ways to open your world to new possibilities by and I've picked those of which I think are the most striking in my situation right now. There are five categories and I'll explain why I want to get into these new ways of thinking and acting.

GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD

3. Have a vision session. Write in a journal, create a video, sketch—anything that lets you explore what excites you most.

Yes, I have a journal, but didn't write anything in since two or more weeks and I feel like whenever you do not write down or sketch down your thoughts and ideas, they will fade. Thoughts won't become real if you cannot visualize them, so write them down and make your dream happen :)

 6. Commit to something you always say you’ll do but always fail to start—and then take the first step right now.

I want to eat less meat. I had my ups and downs with this aspect and couldn't erase it from my plate for good, but maybe I'll manage to reduce it more and more. So far, it was easy to not have it when I wasn't thinking about eating less. Now, that I really try to have less, it's like I'm not sticking to it. No forcing allowed here, I should definitely free my mind of that thought and it will come naturally.

GET OUT IN THE OPEN

 18. Start something you always assumed it was too late to do. Take gymnastics, learn guitar. If it moves you, get started today. It’s never too late.

Yes, I totally agree with this phrase: It's never too late. Before starting with skating I was all about: 'Oh my, I cannot skate, haven't done it before and I feel super insecure.' I really felt like I was too old to start something new. Like it's always better to start with a hobby when you're a kid since you don't care about the risks, dangers or whatsoever. NO WAY! You're really never to old and honestly, who cares your age?? As long as you're having fun and love it, DO IT! Go for it, start today :) If I haven't started I wouldn't be able to feel the freedom I'm having when I'm with my longboard, so go ahead and live!

GET IN WITH PEOPLE

23. Compliment a stranger on something you notice. Everyone likes to be appreciated, and it’s a great way to start a conversation.

I want to try this out right now! Haha, cannot wait for all the people who will be like: 'What? Why is this girl saying this?' :)
Oh, just remembered, I'd compliment strange people because of their style or their shoes etc. and they'd be like: 'Hey thanks' (e.g. Fashion Week Situation) or 'Okay...bye' (at random places), hahaha =D I assume that they thought something like 'Weirdo!'.

28. Bring enough lunch to share with other people at work—particularly childhood favorites. Nothing bonds like shared nostalgia.

I always bring a lot of food!!! I just love sharing my fruits and vegetables with others. Bring some cut up veggies to school or work and share with your neighbor :) They'll definitely have a smile for you!

GET INTO YOUR WORK

32. Speak up in a meeting, even if you don’t feel confident or you’re afraid you’ll be embarrassed. Your ideas can only take shape if you put them out there.

Oh, that's a real challenge for me since I'm not the one who'd raise the hand to say something. I'd rather observe and think about it. Maybe, this is the time that I have to speak up for my ideas and opinion about stuff.

GET CAUGHT IN THE WEB

47. If you blog, find other bloggers in your niche and email them to introduce yourself.

Oh my, if I had time, I would do all this stuff =D Well, but sooner or later I really want to do this! No procrastination anymore, I've wanted to focus on me and my blog more, so get it on!

The list is long and there are another 40+ways to open up for new possibilities, but it's definitely worth reading if you're lacking some inspiration and motivation as well! Now, I know what to do and I love challenging myself! What are your favorite ways or things you'd like to challenge yourself?

Here's another tip, don't overwork yourself and pick one thing out and then try it instead of setting yourself too many goals at once, just saying ;-)

Karlsruhe Longboard Open 2013

A Longboard made out of wine barrel :)

Hey guys!
Here are some impressions from the last big Longboard event close to my home. This one was held in Karlsruhe by the wonderful Daniela Schukalla, sponsored by Concrete Wave Cologne, and here lovely friends and team. I was happy to be there since it's always a very nice atmosphere at those contests and happenings, good vibes are on and you'll meet crazy skate fellows :) I didn't dare myself to take a ride since I wasn't sure if I make the curve but will definitely try out next year, it looked like so much fun! AND: I will bring a helmet and some protection gears for sure. The season is almost over, but I try to use the last sunshines to skate a bit every week. Put some hoodies on and move! Let's get out guys!! :)
